Their most recent full-length album, 2017\u2019s <em>Everything Now<\/em>, saw the band with their most lush, electronic backings to date\u2014 tracks like \u201cAlmost Blue\u201d almost possessing a disco-tinged sound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">Five years after that release, Arcade Fire has returned from their long stretch of quiet just as loud as they first burst through the scene, putting out the connecting pair of singles \u201cThe Lightning I, II\u201d on Thursday, March 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">The singles give the same stripped-back, yet beautifully dynamic sound that <em>Funeral <\/em>does<em>. <\/em>And it seems it\u2019s more than just a coincidence. Artwork of a hand clutching lightning bolts used in a booklet of the group\u2019s debut LP was recently used in a promotional video for \u201cThe Lightning I, II\u201d \u2014 among a treasure-hunt-like dropping of other subtle advertising leading up to its release. Additionally, \u201cWake Up,\u201d the seventh track from <em>Funeral<\/em>, has another tie-in to the recent release. The song ends rather gently, giving emphasis on the lyrics, \u201cWith my lightnin\u2019 bolts-a-glowin,\u2019 I can see where I am goin.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">All these years later, it seems Arcade Fire has repeatedly ruminated over this concept of maintaining some control, or at least foresee, the direction of their lives. And this time, they declare that they may not exactly know where they\u2019re going, but they show an ability to find peace and acceptance in the very unknown of it all. With the track\u2019s lively sound and a belt-worthy level of vocal and lyrical conviction, they try to teach listeners to do the same.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">The first of the two parts of \u201cThe Lighting I, II\u201d is softer instrumentally. A stretched note of violin and a glissando of the piano by R\u00e9gine Chassagne first transports listeners into Arcade Fire\u2019s sonic world, the sounds reminiscent of the music of the 80\u2019s. Win Butler comes in with his distinctive vocals and an acoustic guitar. Through poetic verses, Butler sings of being \u201cbeat down and broken\u201d in a deeply faulted world. But singing together for the chorus, Chassagne and Butler instill a promise. They sing, \u201cWe can make it if you don\u2019t quit on me, I won\u2019t quit on you, don\u2019t quit on me.\u201d The song is bright yet moody, ending with a thunderous tunnel of drums, leading directly into \u201cThe Lightning II.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">Bursting with energy from the start, \u201cThe Lightning II,\u201d is nothing short of electric. Quick-paced drumming, an incessant bassline, guitar and piano hardly slow down, only trailing away in a purposely messy clash at the song\u2019s end. \u201cWaiting on the lightning, what will the light bring\u201d Butler repeatedly asks through the song. This is ultimately the line he finishes on; it\u2019s fitting, in a way, as listeners wait for the band\u2019s next chapter to unfold. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">\u201cThe Lightning I, II\u201d is the lead single of Arcade Fire\u2019s upcoming album <em>We<\/em>, set to come out on May 6, 2022. Previews of yet-to-be-released tracks like \u201cAge of Anxiety\u201d indicate that there will be more moments speaking to the level of unknown addressed in the first two singles and show, as usual, the band\u2019s active efforts to point out the flaws of society. For now, Arcade Fire promises, if \u201cwe keep hoping, in the distance we\u2019ll see a glow.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Arcade Fire
