Often overlooked and likely collecting dust in your dad\u2019s oversized, black vinyl CD case, Green Day\u2019s fifth studio album Nimrod<\/em> turned 25 yesterday, October 14th. Coming to consciousness during the mid-2000s, I\u2019ve been aware of the quintessential 90s punk rock trio for as long as I can remember. Providence local radio station WBRU played hits off their seminal album Dookie<\/em> daily \u2014 \u201cShe,\u201d \u201cLongview,\u201d \u201cWelcome to Paradise,\u201d and of course \u201cBasket Case.\u201d I didn\u2019t become a big fan of the band until my freshman year of high school, but as I took a deep dive into their discography I became fond of Nimrod<\/em>. It is arguably their most sonically and lyrically diverse album, presenting the themes typically found on a punk record in new, refreshing ways. <\/p>\n

Green Day never strays too<\/em> far from the iconic sound that solidified their place in rock history. They play around within the genre in \u201cPlatypus (I Hate You)\u201d and \u201cTake Back,\u201d which are more metal adjacent tracks. There is some fun instrumentation on \u201cWalking Alone\u201d \u2014  frontman and lead guitarist, Billie Joe Armstrong, learned to play the harmonica just for this track \u2014 and \u201cKing for a Day\u201d \u2014 a loud fanfare of horns heralding the song\u2019s unapologetic drag queen narrator. \u201cLast Ride In\u201d is one of two completely instrumental songs that Green Day has ever released. It\u2019s an eerie three minute interlude with a driving bass, horns, and even some marimba. However, the album opens with \u201cNice Guys Finish Last\u201d \u2014 a smart move for the band, since it is the song that\u2019s most reminiscent of their earlier work. It\u2019s loud, it\u2019s fast, it\u2019s angry, and it would fit right in with either Dookie<\/em> or Insomniac<\/em>\u2019s track lists. There are a handful of songs that match this classic hate anthem energy \u2014 namely \u201cThe Grouch\u201d and \u201cJinx\u201d \u2014 but what sets them apart from other songs in Green Day\u2019s repertoire are their lyrics and storytelling quality. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Grouch\u201d takes on the perspective of a narrator that is growing old, feels wronged by everyone and everything, and is struggling to find a reason to keep going. I feel like these sentiments could relate to the band\u2019s time spent in the punk scene \u2014 by 1997 they had already been around for nearly a decade. The chorus, \u201cWasted youth, and a fistful of ideas \/ I had a young and optimistic point of view,\u201d suggests that this narrator was once bright eyed, shiny and excited about the opportunities life offered them. Now they have been chewed up, spat back out, and left feeling jaded. <\/p>\n

On the surface, \u201cJinx\u201d is just another self deprecating tune. If you take a second \u2014 quite literally a second because most of these songs aren\u2019t much longer than two minutes \u2014 and really focus on the lyrics, there\u2019s a certain weight to them that hasn\u2019t been present on previous albums. The second verse is especially striking with the lyrics \u201cYou finally met your nemesis \/ Disguised as your fatal long lost love \/ So kiss it goodbye until death do us part \/ You fell for a jinx for cryin\u2019 out loud.\u201d This level of self reflection where Armstrong is contextualizing his internal struggles with how they impact his loved ones. <\/p>\n

Self reflexivity is a major aspect of this record as many of the tracks detail struggles with alcoholism, depression, and guilt. The lead single, \u201cHitchin a Ride\u201d \u2014 which implements a string arrangement in addition to the formulaic guitar, bass, and drums \u2014 is about struggling to stay sober. The chorus is playful, utilizing the old phrase \u201coff the wagon\u201d to illustrate their departure from discipline and is now \u201chitchin\u2019 a ride\u201d to more fun but self-destructive tendencies. These ideas are echoed in \u201cAll the Time\u201d and \u201cUptight\u201d \u2014 the latter of which suggests that suicide is likely the best option for the narrator: \u201cUptight, I\u2019m a nag with a gun, yeah \/ All night, suicide\u2019s last call \/ I\u2019ve been uptight all night \/ I\u2019m a son of a gun.\u201d <\/p>\n

Two songs that speak deeply to me are \u201cRedundant\u201d and, one of Green Day\u2019s most popular songs ever, \u201cGood Riddance (Time of Your Life).\u201d I choke back tears every time I listen to \u201cRedundant\u201d and there was a period of time where I had to skip it, otherwise I would be a blubbering mess. Unlucky love songs aren\u2019t a new venture for Green Day, but again, there\u2019s gravitas that always leaves an indelible mark on me. I think it might be the chorus that does it for me:  \u201cNow I cannot speak \/ I\u2019ve lost my voice \/ I\u2019m speechless and redundant \u2018cause \u2018I love you\u2019s not enough \/ I\u2019m lost for words.\u201d There\u2019s nothing particularly profound in these lyrics, I\u2019ll admit that. I\u2019m sure these are thoughts everyone has had in a failing relationship with someone that you still care deeply for. Except, you don\u2019t usually get this mourning from Green Day. It\u2019s usually something like \u201cyou don\u2019t love me anymore so now I\u2019m going to hate you for the rest of my life.\u201d Armstrong sounds so hopeless in this and it absolutely kills me. <\/p>\n

Last, but certainly not least, \u201cGood Riddance (Time of Your Life)\u201d is often considered a sell out song by hardcore Green Day fans. This is probably because it gets played at graduations and proms and weddings and even funerals. First of all, I couldn\u2019t disagree more about it being a sell out song. I get that it\u2019s acoustic and definitely more appealing to a mass audience in a musical sense, but the lyrics are still very much in a punk vein. The fact that it is played at such sentimental moments baffles me. It is literally called \u201cGood Riddance.\u201d Armstrong is wishing nothing but the absolute worst for his ex partner in this song. How it has been so misinterpreted, I\u2019ll never understand, but maybe that\u2019s also what makes it an exceptionally punk anthem. Somehow, everyone has bought into believing this is a sweet song when it\u2019s actually a fat \u201cup yours.\u201d  <\/p>\n

The more I listened to Nimrod <\/em>while writing this article, the less I understood its sort of middle child treatment. Green Day puts newfound maturity at the forefront of this record, exploring different avenues both musically and lyrically all while staying true to their roots. I mean, punk songs always talk about alcohol, drugs, and partying, right? But it\u2019s usually talked about in a positive and fun way. Here, we\u2019re looking at how damaging this behavior can be to yourself and the people around you. Even though it was written by a 25-year-old man, I would still classify Nimrod <\/em>as a coming of age record. We shouldn\u2019t be sneering at this like some worn out punk rocker who thinks they\u2019re living out old glory days when they\u2019re really just in the throes of addiction \u2014 we should be celebrating it. If you want to listen to a loud, upbeat record that possesses a remarkable sense of self reflexivity even 25 years after its release, give Nimrod<\/em> a try. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
