\u201cWindows Down\u201d by Big Time Rush samples \u201cSong 2\u201d by Blur<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nickelodeon-based boy band Big Time Rush knew they\u2019d bless our ears when they released \u201cWindows Down\u201d on June 25, 2012. The song\u2019s hook samples Britpop group Blur\u2019s \u201cSong 2,\u201d which reached number two on the United Kingdom\u2019s singles chart. Both songs carry a sense of freedom and wildness \u2013 the type that can only come from youth \u2013 and \u201cWindows Down\u201d actually comes from an early demo by glittery pop star Kesha. Originally called \u201cWoo Hoo,\u201d \u201cWindows Down\u201d is just as much of an earworm as \u201cSong 2\u201d and will satisfy any need for nostalgia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“TiK ToK” by Kesha samples \u201cFive Minutes of Funk\u201d by Whodini<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before we spent hours scrolling through TikTok, we spent hours listening to Kesha, the rebellious bombshell that ruled the early 2010s. Perhaps best known from her discography is the hit song \u201cTiK ToK,\u201d a classic house party song. But, did you know the song contains samples from Whodini\u2019s 1994 song \u201cFive Minutes of Funk\u201d? Kesha\u2019s infamous line \u201cNow, the party don’t start ’til I walk in\u201d is borrowed from Whodini\u2019s opening lyrics: \u201cNow the party didn\u2019t start till I walk in.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cLive While We\u2019re Young\u201d by One Direction uses the guitar riff of \u201cShould I Stay or Should I Go\u201d by The Clash<\/strong><\/p>\n

The British invasion continues with One Direction\u2019s lead single from their second album Take Me Home<\/em> (2012). Soon becoming a top ten hit in fifteen countries, the success of \u201cLive While We\u2019re Young\u201d is hardly a surprise; the opening guitar riff bears a striking resemblance to legendary English punk band The Clash\u2019s song \u201cShould I Stay or Should I Go,\u201d from their fifth album Combat Rock <\/em>(1981). Although One Direction got backlash for the striking similarities between the two guitar riffs, \u201cLive While We\u2019re Young\u201d went on to peak at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, continuing the legacy of The Clash\u2019s frontman Joe Strummer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cPaper Planes\u201d by M.I.A. uses the beat from \u201cStraight to Hell\u201d by The Clash<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another single from The Clash\u2019s Combat Rock<\/em> was transformed into an iconic and essential 2000s song: \u201cStraight to Hell.\u201d The song criticizes injustices and inequalities regarding immigration with lyrics such as \u201cThere ain’t no need for ya \/ Go straight to hell, boys \/ Go straight to hell, boys.\u201d Produced and co-written with Diplo, British artist M.I.A. continues the theme of immigration in her hit song \u201cPaper Planes,\u201d released on February 11, 2008. More than a song that you\u2019re sure to hear at any party with solo cups, \u201cPaper Planes\u201d paints a satirical picture of Americans\u2019 perception of Third World immigrants with its lyrics: \u201cI fly like paper, get high like planes \/ If you catch me at the border, I got visas in my name.\u201d Although M.I.A.\u2019s cannabis mentions and sound effects of gunshots resulted in the song\u2019s censorship, \u201cPaper Planes\u201d proved an ultimate commercial success and reached number four on the US Billboard Hot 100. Any fan of the Clash can recognize the song\u2019s sample of \u201cStraight to Hell,\u201d whose beat is used in \u201cPaper Planes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cPump It\u201d by Black Eyed Peas heavily incorporates “Misirlou” by Dick Dale and His Del-Tones<\/strong><\/p>\n

If \u201cPump It\u201d by the Black Eyed Peas sounds familiar, it\u2019s because it is. The Black Eyed Peas\u2019s song \u201cPump It\u201d released in 2005 is not only an iconic staple of 2000s music but samplesa song from the 1960s. The Black Eyed Peas\u2019s top-20 single on the US Billboard Hot 100 heavily incorporates Dick Dale\u2019s surf version of \u201cMiserlou,\u201d released in 1962. Dick Dale\u2019s song is known for its feature in Quentin Tarantino\u2019s 1994 film Pulp Fiction,<\/em> which widely popularized the song to audiences worldwide. However, the original song was being played as early as the 1920s as a folk song from the Eastern Mediterranean region, with the song\u2019s author unknown.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Don’t Stop The Music” by Rihanna samples \u201cWanna Be Startin\u2019 Somethin\u2019\u201d by Michael Jackson<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recorded as a single for Rihanna\u2019s third studio album Good Girl Gone Bad<\/em> in 2007, \u201cDon\u2019t Stop the Music\u201d is a legendary dance song that captivated all of our ears upon the first listen. There\u2019s a reason for that besides Rihanna\u2019s compelling and sultry vocals: Michael Jackson\u2019s 1983 song \u201cWanna Be Startin’ Somethin’\u201d is sampled in it. Music journalists praised the song\u2019s sampling of the hook \u201cMama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-koosa\u201d and Rihanna ended up getting a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording. While Jackson received songwriting credits for \u201cDon\u2019t Stop the Music,\u201d both Jackson and Rihanna were sued by Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango, who declared his 1972 song \u201cSoul Makossa\u201d to be the origin of the hook.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
