And resonate, it sure did. Scrolling through your Twitter timeline as of late, it would likely be impossible not to witness a swarm of riotous \u201cyee-haws\u201d and images of e-girl-style pink cowboy hats. And this brings about an important question: since when did the cowboy trend become the pinnacle of cool?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">\u201cWhere did this trend truly begin?\u201d, one might initially ask. In the past, weren\u2019t we mocking trailer-truck driving, horse-riding, southern gems for their then unconventional lifestyle and fashion, as opposed to proudly brazening the descriptor \u201ccowboy\u201d for ourselves?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">With the release of Mitski\u2019s fourth studio record, <em>Be the Cowboy, <\/em>during the early fall of 2018, music listeners took a collective reexamination of their consciousness, opting to sport bedazzled cowboy hats and vintage cowboy boots as opposed to last season\u2019s camo pants and FILA Disruptors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">The only difference between what is being embraced as \u201cyee haw culture\u201d versus what is actually \u201ccowboy\u201d-like is the fact that what\u2019s becoming trendy isn\u2019t reminiscent of standard mid-west memorabilia. Mitski\u2019s record, for example, is a far cry from country; instead, the album rests on the Japanese-American singer-songwriter\u2019s melancholy, indie-infused roots. She sings of devastating heartbreak and loneliness but does so in a way that depresses, and also comforts. Her raw emotional outpouring speaks to the darkest parts of the psyche: we, too, want love and validation and for somebody to kiss us like we\u2019re in a movie. Maybe her utterly \u201crelatable\u201d content and masterful composition is what made <em>Be the Cowboy<\/em> truly popular, and the cowboy trend simply followed suit, a symbol of the lonely hearts club?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">\u201cMitski released her treasured album, <em>Be the Cowboy<\/em> well ahead of our present yee-haw cultural dominance,\u201d writer for <em>Vulture<\/em>, Dee Locket, says, and that\u2019s a statement not lacking in truth. Her article, entitled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2019\/03\/mac-demarco-mitski-controversy.html\">The Battle of Mitski and Mac Demarco\u2019s \u2018Nobody\u2019 Songs Is Truly Something to Behold<\/a>,\u201d brings about an interesting and recent controversy between artists Mac Demarco and Mitski, such having solidified the trend\u2019s uprising. Whether Demarco actually spends a majority of his time under a rock and truly missed Mitski\u2019s album of the summer, we\u2019ll never know. What we do know, though, is that his upcoming release, <em>Here Comes the Cowboy <\/em>(2019), brings about a bad sense of deja-vu (noting that the lead single is ALSO entitled \u201cNobody,\u201d as Mitski\u2019s had been). Another player has entered the ring: despite doing so in a manner that borderline infringes on Mitksi\u2019s rights as an artist, Mac following in her footsteps makes it clear that the cowboy movement is here to stay (if this controversy doesn\u2019t kill it first).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">Aside from Mitski\u2019s personal prominence in the popularization of spurs and lassos, it can also be said that country music\u2014or more so, country pop\u2014is making a promising comeback which only furthers the cause. Emphasized by Kacey Musgraves\u2019 massive Grammy wins at this year\u2019s Awards, country music is far from the makings of social alienation anymore. Instead, it\u2019s almost encouraged. Her debut record, <em>Golden Hour<\/em>, is far removed from \u201cyour grandma\u2019s kind of backwoods twang,\u201d as Helen Holmes of <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2019\/02\/this-years-grammys-were-the-ultimate-tribute-to-yeehaw-culture\/\"><em>The Observer<\/em><\/a> notes, but is rather, delivers country in a much more current, stylish package. Preaching feminist, headstrong values and encouraging young women to be true to who they are, all whilst channeling country sensation Dolly Parton, Musgraves has contributed a massive role in country\u2019s re-branding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">Alongside Musgraves\u2019 claim to the throne, Miley Cyrus\u2019 return to her country roots as of recent, Beyonce\u2019s country-inspired powerhouse anthem, \u201cDaddy Lessons,\u201d and a resurgence of online memes have made it known that a large part of the mainstream is donning ten-gallon hats and proud of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">As opposed to country\u2019s once hyper-masculine, gun-slinging persona, it\u2019s transformed into something much easier to swallow, adorned with rhinestones, a little irony, and a quirky, yet cute cowboy trope that one can harmlessly enjoy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">As an infamous individual on the now deceased Vine once said, \u201cYee yee,\u201d a country bumpkin\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1399,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_kad_blocks_custom_css":"","_kad_blocks_head_custom_js":"","_kad_blocks_body_custom_js":"","_kad_blocks_footer_custom_js":"","_kad_post_transparent":"","_kad_post_title":"","_kad_post_layout":"","_kad_post_sidebar_id":"","_kad_post_content_style":"","_kad_post_vertical_padding":"","_kad_post_feature":"","_kad_post_feature_position":"","_kad_post_header":false,"_kad_post_footer":false,"_kad_post_classname":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1398","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.7 -
