Well, they kinda did.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">In their ninth studio album, Tegan and Sara dusted off songs they recorded when they were in high school and made them into something new. In the sister duo\u2019s first song off the record, <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/1MnCNW7fVSLHmLnCXxRg1k?si=0V3YaoGeRt69DFKcfqiWAQ\">\u201cHold My Breath Until I Die,\u201d<\/a> they leave no stone unturned. An uncensored and uninhibited piece of work, it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of wanting to dissipate into a puddle when you realize you should\u2019ve said anything to someone, but didn\u2019t. Their voices, now mature, are juxtaposed with words that are explicitly written by someone still going through puberty: \u201c<em>Oh, If I hold my breath until I die, I\u2019ll be alright.<\/em>\u201d It seems so melodramatic, but they convince us that that\u2019s the only other option besides confessing one\u2019s love. A loud anthem of words unsaid, it\u2019s the perfect set up to an album that is as much a time capsule of emotion as it is a relevant look into how thoughts about the future have manifested into Tegan and Sara\u2019s present.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7PRtBDpm6zY\">\u201cI\u2019ll Be Back Someday,\u201d<\/a> their first single off the album, is a celebration of youth, rebellion, and a sense of something new beginning. With upbeat drums and loud guitar, it\u2019s a song about getting away and leaving people behind, but saying that they don\u2019t want it to be like that forever: \u201c<em>To the end my friend,\u201d oh, what a lie \/ Oh, what a lie \/ If I could pretend, if I could lie \/ If I could lie \/ But I can\u2019t stay \/ No, I can\u2019t stay.<\/em>\u201d This is a self-confession in which they\u2019re truthful about what they want. Screaming over loud guitar as opposed to a whisper, they\u2019re telling the world what they really want from it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">Two slower songs that read like diary entries, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=reJTgZRQN2Y\">Hello, I\u2019m Right Here<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0GPPC_oFp4Q\">Please Help Me<\/a>,\u201d both access the angst-ridden feelings that a teenager would be too scared to ever say in front of someone. While \u201cHello, I\u2019m Right Here\u201d is a standout that matches its vulnerable lyrics with a melodic string section that brings the listener to its knees, \u201cPlease Help Me\u201d feels like an afterthought. It comes with good intentions, but its acoustic sound doesn\u2019t seem to match the rest of the album\u2019s engulfing, emotional instrumentation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">The biggest gift that this album brings is a song called <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/1QvrgYP6bDtqMX9wE7i4NH?si=y7hsSO-gSmCg5JoKHQDiCQ\">\u201cI Don\u2019t Owe You Anything<span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">.<\/span><\/a>\u201d It\u2019s quiet beginning, with a single guitar, closely picks up into a symphony by the first chorus. Tegan and Sara build-up to the chorus, hauntingly hopeless and about a relationship that seems to be falling apart: <em>\u201ccause I don&#8217;t have anything left \/ and I can&#8217;t have faith in you anymore.\u201d<\/em> It\u2019s mourning a relationship that they know can never be, no matter how much they truly want it: \u201c<em>It&#8217;s the way I love you \/ It&#8217;s why I hate you \/ But I don&#8217;t owe you \/ No, I don&#8217;t owe you anything.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap\">\u201cI Don\u2019t Owe You Anything\u201d may be the best song off the album, but <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/0kTzTXAzvfx4ojKw8aLgT6?si=BfKIxeOkSdesr94rgKfXDw\">\u201cI Know I\u2019m Not the Only One<\/a>\u201d is the most impactful. A pop confessional, reminiscent of their early work, the chorus pushes an early 2000s narrative about high school; it\u2019s a nostalgic treat that takes us back to the memory lane of the Quin sisters while also forcing us to think about the present. With lines such as, \u201c<em>I wonder if someday, we&#8217;ll just be a memory,<\/em>\u201d they don\u2019t have to think about that just yet; Tegan and Sara still seem as relevant and reinventive as
