On \u201cFeisty,\u201d the Norwegian art pop duo Smerz are zoomed in on reality. This is the most obnoxious track I\u2019ve heard all year, and I say that as the highest compliment. The droll delivery of couplets like \u201cHe likes to seem mysterious, but really he\u2019s just dumb \/ It\u2019s crowded at the toilet, I check my makeup and my bum\u201d will never cease to make me smirk, and the delightfully sparse electroclash production reminds me of some of the best Peaches and Uffie cuts from the aughts. \u201cFeisty\u201d makes the most boring and cringeworthy moments of the night (the DJ playing a terrible song, seeing an old Tinder match across the bar) feel like moments of true transcendence. &#8212; <strong>Bennett Himmel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Love Takes Miles&#8221; by Cameron Winter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignright is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Love Takes Miles\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2zf1izCOz2F22PF27uhxRF?si=1739c53858b04b37&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I mean, has a more life-affirming song come out in the past year, or past few years? Since its release last December, I\u2019ve played \u201cLove Takes Miles\u201d (and the whole album it\u2019s off of) more consistently than almost anything else I\u2019ve ever heard. Just a real soul-warmer of a song, the kind of tune that has you thinking, tearing up <em>and <\/em>dancing simultaneously, though that also doesn\u2019t discredit the fact that \u201cLove Takes Miles\u201d may also just be the catchiest song ever made. Literally, that chorus is dangerous. I spent the whole first half of the year mumbling the whole song in little non-sequiturs; sometimes it was, \u201cWatching the bells\/watching the lights\/what I want is far away,\u201d and at other times, \u201cYou better start a-walking, babe,\u201d for days on end. \u201cLove Takes Miles\u201d became my mantra, my rock that I would come back to time and again every time I needed a reminder of why it is I love music so much. How Cameron Winter made one of the greatest songs ever so deceptively simple and structurally concise, I will never know. What I <em>do<\/em> know, though, is that I will never not feel my soul melt a little every time I hear him warble out the words, \u201cI need somebody sent down from the sun that talks to me like you used to.\u201d &#8212; <strong>Lucca Swain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Blue Highway&#8221; by Billy Idol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignleft is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Blue Highway\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2LkB0t3N5nvGAkkzU9WRfh?si=0fbc3b8f648e42e8&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Moments turning into hours, days stretching into a season that flashes by, wind blowing in your hair, restless freedom\u2026 Billy Idol\u2019s \u201cBlue Highway\u201d perfectly captures summer with its infectious energy. His vocals pump me up every time and the guitar is enough to send me levitating even when I\u2019m behind the wheel. \u201cBlue Highway\u201d was, therefore, 2025\u2019s summer anthem that I blasted in the car while I drove and romanticized suburban roads. &#8212; <strong>Heather Thorn<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Good Intentions&#8221; by Toad the Wet Sprocket&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignright is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Good Intentions\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/58MDm6l6mI4hGaRqNezOnu?si=87b2f84c1c104ca8&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was Toad the Wet Sprocket\u2019s downtempo California swagger that brought them brief success in the \u201890s, and \u201cGood Intentions\u201d was the ocean breeze that lingered. In fact, the song has lingered so long in my brain that I not only interviewed frontman Glen Philips back in May, but I went to the band\u2019s concert in August. I used to make fun of bands like Toad for being \u201cmom bands,\u201d but \u201cGood Intentions,\u201d with its organ-dominated musings on effing up, made me realize that moms have good taste (sometimes). If you like your college rock cheese on Alex Chilton crackers, this one\u2019s an irresistible poolside treat. &#8212; <strong>Charlie Desjardins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cFall in Love\u201d by Phantogram<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignleft is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Fall In Love\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/5imUTBF35uIoABlV9g9da2?si=738ad77284ec41a5&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A song for this summer and every one from now on, Phantogram\u2019s 2013 track \u201cFall in Love\u201d tore my world apart. The production quality alone is insane. I mean, the combination of the pulsing synthy bass and Sarah Barthel\u2019s passionately desperate vocals is enough to make me wish to crawl out of my skin, to be a fly on the wall in the sound booth. Plus, knowing that Barthel wrote the lyrics for the beat as an aggressive reclamation of her identity as an artist makes it all the more fun. It\u2019s forcefully driven, painfully catchy, and undeniably danceable. &#8212; <strong>Sophie Parrish<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Grace&#8221; by the Durutti Column<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignright is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Grace\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2NFNxyrLNiyGFDAP5QWx3I?si=96b48b7d270443ae&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Summer always feels like purgatory to me. Maybe it has to do with school and the regimented break in seasons, or the fact that I\u2019ve gone home to Chicago every summer since leaving. Either way, I float through time: biking aimlessly, working restaurants, playing iSpy with ephemera. The Durutti Column\u2019s guitarless \u201cGrace\u201d was my meditative companion this summer. The beat bounces and skitters hypnotically over an ambient synthline thin as a beam of light through a stained glass window. A tin-like voice chants indecipherable murmurings over and over before glitching out. The amphibious track feels sacred and alien at once.
