\u201cAll Trader Joe’s were located near centers of learning. Pasadena, where I opened the first one, was because Pasadena is the epitome of a well-educated town,” Trader Joe\u2019s founder Joe Coulombe explained in an interview with the Los Angeles Times<\/a>. \u201cI reframed this: Trader Joe\u2019s is for overeducated and underpaid people, for all the classical musicians, museum curators, journalists \u2014 that’s why we’ve always had good press, frankly!\u201d <\/p>\n

During my first spring break in college, I attended a series of job interviews for a position at the local Trader Joe\u2019s. Having grown up paying visits to the store\u2019s original location in Pasadena, California every weekend, I\u2019ve come to associate Trader Joe\u2019s with home. It\u2019s a familiar, nautical safe haven of sorts. And I knew I\u2019d fit right into their crew. <\/p>\n

Flashback to the summer of 2019. I\u2019m sifting through my Spotify Discover Weekly only to come across a soulful tune entitled \u201cTJ\u201d<\/a> by Orange Guava Passion highlighting Brown University collective\u2019s love for the \u201cfresh format\u201d grocery chain. <\/p>\n

I got this feeling in my bones<\/em><\/p>\n

Feelin’ hungry stuck at home (Woah-oh-oh)<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

All my efforts you elude<\/em><\/p>\n

You really got me in the mood<\/em><\/p>\n

You got all my favorite food <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Soon, I found myself spiraling down a rabbit hole of numerous songs about the market, completely taken aback by Trader Joes\u2019 impact on so many musicians\u2019 lives. Meanwhile, there aren\u2019t any tunes written about Ralph\u2019s or Gelson\u2019s. So, why Trader Joe\u2019s?<\/p>\n

In order to arrive at an answer to that question, I think we should first dive into the overarching themes these songs encompass:<\/p>\n

\u201cTrader Joe\u201d<\/strong><\/a> – Junglepussy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In an interview<\/a> with food publication Bon App\u00e9tit, New York rapper Junglepussy disclosed her dedication to the market and its influence on her perception of love and relationships.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Trader Joe\u2019 is a song about me liking someone but loving myself more and choosing to continue to put myself first even if this person is fun. I just wanted to flip it…and I\u2019m always at Trader Joe\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout \u201cTrader Joe,\u201d Junglepussy illustrates her romantic involvement with someone and her accumulated understanding of casual dating approaches. <\/p>\n

We don’t f*ck, he just pick me up from Trader Joe\u2019s<\/em><\/p>\n

Carry all my groceries and lick on all my toes<\/em><\/p>\n

Tryna cuff but I know you gonna leave me \u2018lone<\/em><\/p>\n

When my phone ring it’s \u2018cause of [expletive] seen the way I grow<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In her song, Junglepussy frames Trader Joe\u2019s as a constant in her life. Who can blame her? A trip to the grocery market is an adventure in and of itself. According to Michael Roberto, professor of management at Bryant University, Coulombe believed the company had \u201c… to get the values right. If we do, we’ll create a great experience. We’re not selling groceries, we’re selling an experience.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cTrader Joe\u2019s\u201d<\/strong><\/a> – Charlie, the Nomad  <\/strong><\/h3>\n

In \u201cTrader Joe\u2019s,\u201d Charlie Dalencour, also known as Charlie, the Nomad, parallels his spiritual lifestyle with the purity of USDA Certified foods sold at the grocery store.<\/p>\n

\n

USDA Certified, keep it organic (repeat)<\/em><\/p>\n

  I know it looks pretty scary, but there\u2019s no time to panic <\/em><\/p>\n

I got the spirit on my side so my whole flow Messianic\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Never eat Mickey D\u2019s, \u2018cause that junk is inedible<\/em><\/p>\n

Keep the chemicals all minimal\u2026 <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Charlie, the Nomad holds Trader Joe\u2019s items to a high standard, associating it with sanctity. In an \u201cInside Trader Joe\u2019s<\/a>\u201d podcast episode, marketing director Tara Miller disclosed that over 80% of the products sold in-store are private-label instead of name-brand. Thus, Trader Joe\u2019s charges less for the same quality of products sold at other chains, who may be marking their prices higher. There is a level of transparency reinforced in this practice, which Charlie has identified as holier-than-thou. <\/p>\n

\u201cTrader Joe\u2019s Low-fat Cinnamon Raisin Granola\u201d<\/strong><\/a> – Brian Friedland and Angela Vincente<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Boston composer Brian Friedland and vocalist Angela Vincente comically approach one of Friedland\u2019s staple household items: Trader Joe\u2019s low-fat cinnamon raisin granola. In fact, Friedland composed an entire album, Household Items<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>based on the belongings in his kitchen cupboard.<\/p>\n

  We just knew there had to be a better way and wouldn\u2019t you know it,<\/em><\/p>\n

There was, there is<\/em><\/p>\n

Trader Joe\u2019s low-fat cinnamon raisin granola<\/em><\/p>\n

Is everything you want from granola<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a composer looking to set a couple of Trader Joe\u2019s texts on boxes to music,\u201d Friedland explained in an interview<\/a> with WBUR\u2019s Andrea Shea. \u201cI\u2019m looking for some new foods with descriptive, colorful packaging.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with Mark Gardiner, author of “Build A Brand Like Trader Joe<\/a>\u2019s, Gardiner explained that \u201c… the secret to Trader Joe’s success is making people believe that the people in the stores really like them and really appreciate them.\u201d<\/p>\n

A day before my final interview with the Captain, I received the news of Emerson\u2019s Boston campus closing. So, the next morning I called in to break the news. Although I\u2019m borderline heartbroken about missing out on the free stickers, employee discount, and the hospitable work environment, I\u2019m eternally grateful for the safe-haven Trader Joe\u2019s has provided for myself and so many others\u2014especially in a time of crisis, like the one we\u2019re living in today. <\/p>\n

Trader Joe\u2019s, while seemingly just a grocery store, continues to stand as so much more for so many people. It sparks inspiration in all of us. And Orange Guava\u2019s \u201cTJ\u201d\u2014the funky bop that started it all for me\u2014does the perfect job of encapsulating this shared feeling. <\/p>\n
